Is 5G Bad For Your Health? And why is demand increasing for PEMF therapy?

This is something I have been giving a great deal of thought to recently, particularly as I have had more time to write during the current UK Coronavirus lockdown. Besides the obvious subject of the virus, I feel one of the main reasons relates to something that I have been asked about many many times recently.

So why is demand increasing for PEMF Therapy?

I believe two of the main elements are:

  1. The increasing threat of our external environment to our health (including 5G).
  2. The increasing disruption we are experiencing to our own immune systems.

The increasing threat of our external environment

There are a lot of potential threats to us in our external environment, but the one I will focus on is the electromagnetic environment. Whilst the electronic environment around us has changed dramatically in the past thirty years, it is only now with the introduction of 5G technology, that there is genuine mainstream curiosity regarding the topic of high frequency signals and our health. At the centre of this is a growing public concern, whilst governments, regulators and the mass media do their best to dismiss this.

Is 5G Bad for Your Health?

A full answer is far beyond the scope of one post but I will shed some light on some of the main issues:

What is 5G Technology?

5G technology has been designed to meet the very large growth demands for data and connectivity that are occurring in our modern society.

What is the threat to our health from 5G?

There are now many scientists whose independent research has demonstrated that the harmful effects of EMFs occur as low as 50Hz (the level of domestic household electricity). Probably, the best known EMF researcher is Martin Pall, Professor Emeritus at Washington State University. His published research on 5G (https://www.jrseco.com/wp-content/uploads/Martin_Pall_PhD_5G_Great_risk_for_EU_US_and_International_Health-Compelling_Evidence.pdf ) makes for a pretty alarming read with regard to the effect of EMFs on our cells:

“The extraordinary sensitivity of the VGCC voltage sensor to the forces of the EMFs tells us that the current safety guidelines allow us to be exposed to EMF levels that are something like 7.2 million times too high.”

A quick note on PEMF Therapy

Martin Pall’s research and many many others, is bad news for high frequency fields, but very good news for low level PEMF Therapy. It highlights what we already know in the low level PEMF community, that our cells are incredibly sensitive to EMFs, and this is precisely why low frequency PEMF Therapy (0-30Hz) can be so beneficial. PEMF targets the same VGCC (effectively a channel into the cell, controlled by a voltage gate), but because the frequency is natural to the cells and at the same level as cells communicate, many beneficial effects can occur.

Back to 5G…

But there are many other EMF researchers too, with 180 scientists and doctors (https://www.jrseco.com/wp-content/uploads/2017-09-13-Scientist-Appeal-5G-Moratorium.pdf ) joining a 5G appeal to the EU in 2017. And before them, a further 230 scientists (https://emfscientist.org/index.php/emf-scientist-appeal ) appealed to the United Nations.

According to Pall’s research the following are a summary of the main harmful effect of EMFS and 5G technology, that have been comprehensively backed by research:

  1. Attack on our nervous systems including our brain.
  2. Attack our endocrine (hormonal) systems.
  3. Produce oxidative stress and free radical damage, which have central roles in all chronic diseases.
  4. Attack on the DNA of our cells.
  5. Produce increased apoptosis (programmed cell death).
  6. Lower male and female fertility.
  7. Produce excessive intracellular calcium.
  8. Attack the cells of our bodies to cause cancer.

The Media Coverage

The mass media are quick to push back on this and say that according to real ‘experts’, there are no harmful effects and 5G falls well within the safety limits. They also say that the only thing to consider is whether EMFs cause heating of body tissue or not. Independent, high quality research has clearly demonstrated that heating of tissue is NOT the only cause for concern. And, these independent expert scientists also severely criticise the current safety levels.

So who sets the EMF safety levels in Europe and what are they?

In Europe, EMF safety standards are divided into different levels, from static fields (0 Hz) to low frequency fields (1Hz to 100 KHz), and radio frequency fields (100KHz to 300GHz) and beyond.

Initial frequency bands for 5G will begin around 600-700 MHz, 3-4 GHz, 26-28 GHz and 38-42 GHz, which are all in the radio frequency range. It is anticipated that 5G will go into the millimetre (mm) wave band above 30 GHz, and reach up to 86 GHz, where it will be operating over shorter distances.

There are a number of organisations within Europe concerned with setting EMF safety standards, and you would likely assume that means there is a wide range of scientific opinion contributing to this. But look a bit closer and there is a clearly dominant group, the ICNIRP. This German organisation is very influential as it evaluates radiation and health risk research, and also provides guidelines for radiation safety limits that most countries use.

Safety standards are not likely to change

Opinion within the ICNIRP regarding EMF safety limits has not really changed since their 1998 publication on EMF safety standards, despite a great deal of extremely convincing research to the contrary. In 2010 the last update to low frequency (1Hz to 100KHz) was made, dismissing the possible harmful health effects of 50-60Hz AC power supply, the standard household electricity supply. They have just published their latest guidelines for safe RadioFrequency EMF exposure (100KHz to 300GHz) in March 2020 https://www.icnirp.org/cms/upload/publications/ICNIRPrfgdl2020.pdf but again what is most notable from reading through is the research that is not included, and the concentration of just one risk area; the heating of body tissue.

In fact, the opinion of the ICNIRP is not easily changed for a good reason, as decisions on who to invite in to the organisation are taken by ICNIRP itself. So, even if you are an ‘outside’ expert with very convincing research findings, you are unlikely to be able to make an impact to safety decisions. In fact, all of the safety organisations are an extremely tight knit group. Out of 13 ICNIRP scientists, six are members of at least one other committee. And in the WHO group, this applies for six out of seven. One in three researchers in the EU commission that gave radiation advice in 2015 was represented in other groups. Perhaps of most concern, critics of the ICNIRP state that its goal is to set safety limits that do not kill people, while allowing technology to work.

Here is a list of the groups:

  • The international commission on non-ionizing radiation protection, ICNIRP.
  • The EU Scientific Committee on Health, Environment and Emerging Risk, SCENIHR / SCHEER.
  • The World Health Organization WHO’s EMF Group.
  • The WHO Cancer Unit IARC, International Agency for Research on Cancer.
  • The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority’s Scientific council on electromagnetic fields.
  • Advisory Group on Non-Ionising Radiation, AGNIR, a public UK committee that existed until 2017.

The disruption of our internal environment: Stress, anxiety and immune system compromise…

Anxiety and stress has been understandably on the increase over the few weeks. And this can disrupt our immune system function. Unfortunately, in the presence of anxiety and stress, our susceptibility to illnesses, such as viral infections can be more likely, and so the negative Covid-19 cycle continues.

Prolonged periods of stress can contribute to many health conditions including:

  • Psoriasis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia

Whilst some degree of stress is healthy for normal functioning and even beneficial for our immunity, chronic stress can be particularly bad. And It is now well established that both anxiety and stress can contribute to autoimmune disease, with the coping behaviours we use to try to mange our stress, such as increase alcohol consumption, further affecting our immune function.

But rather than simply making the immune system weaker, stress makes it act ‘inappropriately’, and this inappropriate action then increases inflammation within the body, from which many problems can result.

A big problem with persistent anxiety and stress, such as many of us are experiencing now with Covid-19, is that we adapt to it, and we ‘reset’ our baseline for detecting it. That means that many of the associated problems like increased inflammation can remain hidden.

When considering why the many potential benefits of low level PEMF therapy can occur, such as anxiety and stress management, plus protection from higher frequency signals, it is really a case of connecting the dots; Once we discover that our cells are exceptionally sensitive to electromagnetic fields, (remember cells amplify EMF signals by up to 7.2 million times) the clearer the answer becomes.

Cindy Sage https://www.degruyter.com/view/journals/reveh/30/4/article-p293.xml summed this up very neatly in her 2015 EMF research; “The ‘informational content’ of Earth’s electromagnetic signalling is like a set of operating instructions for human life.”

It is ALL about the Frequency

The determining factor for benefit or harm lies in the frequency of the EMF. Higher frequencies are unnatural for our cells, and can cause harm. Whilst low level frequencies, at the level that surrounded us when we were evolving as a species (0-30Hz), are natural and can contribute to healing.

The Evidence behind PEMF

There is now a great deal of research (and I will be exploring this further in future posts) into the many benefits of PEMF therapy, and low level frequencies in particular. Much of this research has shown that some of the most effective PEMF signals are incredibly subtle. But it is when these signals are amplified by our cells, that they become registered at just the right level and cause the cells to oscillate. These oscillations then increase until they reach a natural or ‘resonant’ frequency for our cells. It is at this level deep within us, that healing, not harm can occur.
